In this lesson you will discover how to see a subject by breaking it down into planes of different geometrical shapes. This then allows you to visually feel the depth and 3D dynamic of the subject. Once the planes are defined you then add shading to fit each plane value using a pencil.
The first step is to take a selfie of yourself and print it out in black and white. Next, using the light tablet place your image the tablet with a piece of tracing paper over it. If 20lb. paper will work, use it. The third step is to then create the planes that are on the surface of the image. The fourth step is to then add shading to each plane. Once complete paste the image into your sketch book and label the page Discovering Planes of Values.
Below is a sample that Mr. Bonnell created for your visual understanding.
