DISCOVERING THREE DUTCH MASTERS
TWELVE ARTISTS REVIEW
THE IHS ART END OF YEAR VIDEO
Welcome to the Art Department of Islands High School!
In a Nut Shell
(what will you discover or learn in art this year?)
VAC I = Getting beyond the crafts phase. First year art students enter into a whole new paradigm shift from their experience in Junior High. They discover that art is not just about drawing and painting, etc. but that life equals choices and art presents creative choices. Students discover a broader perspective on understanding how to visually read through a visual alphabet of design principles and elements.
VAC 2 = Now that students have completed VAC I it is time to move on to a deeper level. The study of art history opens doors to a deeper way of seeing the world through the lives of the Masters. You have now developed the skills to render and create far greater than ever before and you will go even deeper into learning new techniques. Your ability to not just see a painting but to read it will develop. The world opens up to you in a new way by seeing that everything is a work of art, especially you!
VAC 3 = Independence and depth of learning lead the way in your third year. By now you have discovered what art is really about through a broad world view. Your understanding of how all your classes are linked to art will be evident, from math to science to the language arts. You will have an understanding of how you are wired as an individual, unique, unlike anyone else. You will have independence in working on your art that will enable you to discover new ways to express yourself and to appreciate great artists deeper levels of perspecties on the world.
VAC 4 AP Drawing = In this advanced class you will discover the what and the why that is behind each piece of art you produce. Your insight on the world, different cultures, and artists insights will grow deeper. You will have the freedom to produce small and large works of art that lead you to a greater understanding of yourself and the unique abilities you hold. You will have the the abilities to build a canvas, paint using watercolor skills, develop an oil painting, draw in a unique manner, produce a work of 3 D sculpture, learn ceramics and more.
How Am I Graded?
All students are graded on their effort as shown through their attitude and actions. Art class is not about competition with others, in fact, it is the opposite. Art is about discovery not awards. Art is the opposite of the STEM classes. Art is not approached from the left side of the brain, the numbers side, it is approached from the right side, the intuitive side. You will be doing a lot of writing but you will not be graded on spelling or grammar, just on creativity. A sense of pride should be established with your portfolio in that it is a mirror about you, your efforts, self esteem, and creativity or the pursuit thereof. You will be graded weekly and you will be responsible for maintaining that all your lessons are accounted for in the gradebook. The deeper lesson of learning to take-care-of-yourself is at play here.
A Single Standard Rubric for all lessons:
The traditional rubric contains assessment levels presenting a grade that reflects reaching those levels. In art those levels should only be measured to the amount of effort put into each level. Talent, and ability are not a standard to gage a grade. Therefore, I base my rubric on the pass/fail system of grading. The only intuitive judgement of a lesson is grading that effort after a student has been given ample time to complete a lesson or project.
How to Use this Website
First, remember the website URL address! It is IHSArt.org (Islands High School Art) It is easy to forget and put in .com instead of .org. Org is used for non-profit organizations such as public school. This site has been developed only by Daniel Bonnell and is not a district related site. After you login you will find your class to in the navigation panel to the left. Each lesson plan for the week is presented for the whole school year. The lessons will be subject to changes from time to time. Beneath the class you will discover your portfolio along with all those in your class. All your art work will go in your portfolios. Each Thursday or Friday you will be placing your completed work into your portfolio. I will be demonstrating how to do this after our first week together. Your portfolio is your evidence of the grade you earn.
After sitting in class, Sam Sloth, the artificial student, comes alive to the surprise of others.
